Politics and Society is a relative new course that offers students the opportunity to 'develop the student's ability to be a reflective and active citizen, in a way that is informed by the insights and skills of social and political science'. This subject examines topics that are relevant to the lives of students and are becoming more relevant by the day. The impact of the media, particularly social media, on democracy, sustainable development and the impact of human rights covenants today, are just some of the many interesting aspects of the course. However, students may find the chapter on how decisions are made in school and who wields this power, of most interest!
This Politics and Society course also allows students to complete a project on one of four topics. This aim of this project is to allow the student to actively engage in a political or societal issue, and put the skills they have developed into action. This project is worth 20% of the Leaving Certificate examination.
