Home Economics

Junior Cycle Home Economics:

Junior Cycle Home Economics develops the knowledge, understanding, skills and values necessary to achieve optimal, healthy and sustainable living for every person as an individual, and as a member of families and society. It is studied through three interconnected strands: Food, Health & Culinary Skills; Responsible Family Living, and Textiles and Crafts. This syllabus is for students in the junior cycle post-primary education and is assessed at Common Level only (curriculumonline.ie)

3 year programme

1st year

-Compulsory subject (all first years participate in Home Economics in 1st year)

-1 hour per week

2nd year

-Optional Subject. If chosen, students will participate in Home Economics for 2nd and 3rd year.

-2 hours per week

-CBA 1: duration 8 weeks (craft project)

3rd year

-3 hours per week

-Cookery every second week.

-CBA 2: duration 3 weeks (research written project)

Final Assessment:

-50% cookery exam (April)

-50% written exam (June)

Senior Cycle Home Economics:

Senior Cycle Home Economics provides students with knowledge, understandings, skills and attitudes necessary for managing their own lives, for further and higher education and work. The learning experiences in Home Economics develop flexibility and adaptability in students, prepare them for a consumer-orientated society and provide a learning foundation for a wide range of careers in food, textiles, science, design, social students and tourism. This syllabus is for students in the senior cycle post-primary education and is assessed at Higher and Ordinary Levels. (curriculumonline.ie)

5th year

-Optional subject. If chosen, students will participate in Home Economics for 5th and 6th year

-3 hours per week

-Food assignment journal completed in 5th year. Worth 20% of overall grade in the Leaving Certificate.

6th year

-3 hours per week

-Complete the rest of the course content in preparation for final exam. Worth 80%.
